It was a good friend of mine who recently reminded me about the basis of long term change. When going about creating the life of your dreams, one of the main things to ensure that your actions will persist over the long term, is to create a powerfully supportive environment.
What does this really mean?
Well for the most part, what many people realise is that their friends are not their best support mechanism. When times change and you make the decision to move forward in your life, you sometimes find that your friends are not first in line to help you change.
Why is this?
Well that in itself is a rather large topic, however it could be briefly stated that simply by moving fowards yourself, you are highlighting to them how they are lagging behind, and let's face it, no one likes to feel like that. So, the natural survival instincts kick into gear and strangely your best friends, becomes your best anchors to hold you back.
So when you are thinking about long term change, it's really important to surround yourself with people who will stand up to support your change, and these are probably people who are your mentors, your teachers and anyone who is already in that place you are trying to get to.
I've recently been coaching a gentleman and one of the realisations I had was that he is still living at home, and whatever change does happen, whenever he's back home long enough, that destructive environment causes him to doubt the change and very quickly will revert back to a worse state.
If you too are stuck living at home with parents, and you need to change your surroundings, I suggest doing whatever it takes to change that.
We all love our parents, however in this modern day society, it's a fair point to say that a lot of parents believe they know how to parent, by the mere fact that they gave birth. This of course couldn't be further from the truth.
It's like saying just because I learnt how to run, or it's natural that I can run, that I should be a running coach.
We can all make changes in an instant, but it takes commitment to make changes for the long term. Remember that it is your own responsibility to use this advice accordingly. It is up to you to make the change and then commit to seeing it through by taking the right steps towards it.
If I give you a hammer, who's responsibility is it to get value from that hammer? It's you! by itself, the hammer has no value, just as much as the advice I give you has no value until you put it to use.
