Most of the self-help and motivational books that are popular bestsellers are years, maybe even decades old. It’s extremely rare that a new-age self-help book is promoted to the level of international bestseller. However, Rhonda Byrne shattered this loose fact by dropping her aptly titled, The Secret, on an unsuspecting world in 2006. The Secret’s claim to fame was that it was advertized on Oprah, not once, but twice. The book immediately hit number-one on both the New York Times Bestseller list and the Amazon sales charts. This is an impressive feat, to say the least.

The Secret was even made into a movie of the same name. What it deals with, basically, is a centuries-old technique titled the Law of Attraction. Simply put, this states that by using positive thinking, a person can influence the outcome in their life. Other self-help books teach a similar technique, but none have reached the popularity of The Secret in recent years. Even the famed Deepak Chopra’s books, and his line “happy thoughts make happy molecules” fail to top Rhonda’s sales.

There is quite a bit of mysticism sprinkled in the book. The Laws of Attraction, as Rhonda writes, are unlocked by understanding the cosmos. This Nancy Reagan-esque approach has also earned the book some critics. However, critics are unable to cite exact instances of the motivational book failing to work. They simply spew talking points about how the “cosmos” theory is all myth. The truth of the matter: Nobody knows for sure. Any person claiming to know definitively is telling tales.

The 198-page book deals with a lot of Rhonda’s personal life experiences. She touches on how her life collapsed a year prior to penning the work, and how by searching through old techniques, she found a common link between them all. Thus, she dubbed her findings “The Secret.” Rhonda was convinced that this secret had helped the greatest people in history rise to prominence. Not only did she write a book, but she also made DVDs further explaining her findings.

The DVD has been just as famous as the book, appearing on shows like Larry King Live and being considered one of the most influential self-help works in the last 100 years. Time Magazine also named Rhonda one of the world’s most 100 influential people. No small feat by any stretch of the imagination.

Not only did Rhonda delve deep into past literature and the history of the world’s most successful people to unlock her secret, but she also worked very closely with twenty-nine contributors to write The Secret.

Books of the spiritual nature have always had their niche in the mainstream; however, Rhonda Byrne was able to cross over and tap into a worldwide market. The effectiveness of her theory depends on a person’s willingness to accept that “the secret” isn’t that difficult to find out if one is willing to explore the possibilities and use her positive approach. Three years after the book’s release, it’s still selling well across the globe.
